Discover the best compatible tank mates for Kribensis by troubleshooting community setups. Candidates are ranked by shared water parameters, aquarium swim zone pressure, temperament, and predator/prey safety.
Tank size assumptions
Results assume at least the larger listed minimum tank size, full adult size, a cycled aquarium, proper group sizes, and normal filtration. Shrimp and fry are treated more cautiously than adult fish.
Kribensis tank mate strategy
Kribensis are dwarf West African cichlids, but they are still cichlids. The best Kribensis tank mates are usually sturdy midwater schooling fish or peaceful upper-level fish that do not compete for caves, fry space, or the lower substrate territory.
Best tank mate pattern
Choose calm fish that use the middle or upper water column, tolerate 75-80F water, and are too large to be treated as fry or tiny prey.
Watch breeding aggression
A pair can defend a cave or bottom territory strongly. Add visual breaks, avoid crowding the substrate, and be ready to separate fish if guarding behavior escalates.
Avoid fragile bottom dwellers
Do not plan the tank around delicate bottom fish, dwarf shrimp colonies, or tiny slow fish that may be chased when Kribensis claim a territory.

Common Kribensis compatibility questions
Can Kribensis live with community fish?
Often, but the setup matters. Community fish should be large enough, fast enough, and placed mostly outside the cave/bottom territory. A breeding pair can become much less tolerant than a single fish.
Are Kribensis good for shrimp tanks?
No. Kribensis are not a good choice for dwarf shrimp colonies. Adult shrimp may sometimes avoid attention, but shrimplets and small shrimp are at risk.
What tank size is better?
Use 30 gallons as a practical minimum for most mixed community plans. Larger footprints make it easier to build a cave zone, open swimming space, and broken sightlines.
What should I avoid?
Avoid other territorial cichlids in small tanks, delicate bottom dwellers, very tiny fish, and any stocking plan that forces tank mates through the Kribensis cave area.
